Mlali Children’s Rehabilitation Centre: A Beacon of Hope and Healing

Nestled in the heart of Tanzania's Dodoma Region, the Mlali Children's Rehabilitation Centre stands as a testament to the Capuchin Friars' unwavering commitment to serving the marginalized and promoting the dignity of every human being. Established by Italian Capuchin missionaries over 40 years ago, the Centre has been a sanctuary for children suffering from severe physical deformities, offering them life-changing surgeries and rehabilitation. Today, it is managed by the Capuchin Friars of Tanzania, who continue the mission with dedication and compassion.

The Centre provides comprehensive medical care, including corrective surgeries performed by visiting surgeons from Italy, and extensive physical therapy to ensure optimal recovery. Children receive holistic care, encompassing medical treatment, nutritious meals, and a nurturing environment that fosters emotional and spiritual well-being. This approach reflects the Capuchin ethos of simplicity, fraternity, and service to the poor and marginalized.

In alignment with the Capuchin vision of promoting peace and justice, the Centre not only addresses physical ailments but also empowers children to reintegrate into society. By providing education and vocational training, the Centre equips children with the skills and confidence needed to lead fulfilling lives, breaking the cycle of poverty and exclusion.

The Centre's sustainability is bolstered by agricultural initiatives, including vegetable gardens, poultry, and dairy farming. These projects not only provide fresh produce for the children's meals but also generate income to support the Centre's operations. This self-sustaining model exemplifies the Capuchin commitment to stewardship and responsible use of resources.

International partnerships play a crucial role in the Centre's success. Collaborations with organizations like the Seraphic Mass Association and Smile Mission have facilitated the provision of medical supplies, equipment, and volunteer support. These partnerships enhance the Centre's capacity to deliver high-quality care and expand its reach to more children in need.

The Mlali Children's Rehabilitation Centre embodies the Capuchin mission of being a prophetic witness of Franciscan sister-brotherhood in the world. Through its compassionate care, holistic approach, and commitment to justice and peace, the Centre continues to transform lives, offering hope and healing to the children of Tanzania.
